While getting through a tough trophy list can be rewarding, sometimes we all want an easygoing experience. We’ve dug through the PlayStation Store and used our own experiences to figure out what PS5 games in 2024 have an easy trophy list and platinum.

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth

Infinite Wealth puts players back in the shoes of Ichiban Kasuga as he attempts to help the ex-Yakuza after the previous game’s events. Though he must detour on that path, a new journey takes him (and the series) to America for the first time. He must now navigate the culture of Hawaii to unravel a whole new conspiracy.

Earth Defense Force: World Brothers 2 on PS5

With this release, there have been four spin-off releases in the Earth Defense Force franchise (not counting the 4.1 Wing Diver game). I have various problems with Insect Armageddon and Iron Rain, but World Brothers is where I felt they nailed it. While the other two skewed too far from the core concept, World Brothers perfectly captured the EDF spirit. I was excited to see how a sequel would improve on the already excellent first game, and I was happy with what I found.

If you played Earth Defense Force 6 when it was released a few months ago, there are some sizeable differences between the two. In contrast to the mainline EDF games being on the grittier side and their stories being downers, World Brothers is all color and cheer. Whereas you control one character in the normal games, you craft have a squad of four characters in WB from various classes that you can quickly swap through in missions. The other biggest difference is graphics, as World Brothers looks like it was made in Minecraft.

If you’re a trophy hunter, there is no better resource than the catalog offered as part of a PlayStation Extra/Premium subscription. It is a gold mine of fun games with terrific trophy lists just ripe for the picking. For those unsure where to start, we have compiled a list of PlayStation Plus Extra & Premium catalog games with easy trophy lists. Rest assured, we will update this as titles enter and leave the catalog over time.

Cat Quest 1 & 2

Both Cat Quest games follow a similar gameplay loop, offering the same action RPG experience. There are enemies in the overworld, but the landscape is littered with dungeons of various levels. The goal is to level up and challenge dungeons of increasing level/difficulty for the weapon/armor hidden inside that will raise your stats the best so you can survive tougher areas.

Sony has announced a Technical Presentation that will stream on Sept. 9. This isn’t a State of Play and will only be nine minutes long. With all this information in hand, it certainly sounds like we’re getting information on an upcoming PS5 Pro model. We don’t exactly know what to expect, but we do have a wishlist of things we hope it includes.

PS3 Backwards Compatibility

In February, Sony filed a new patent related to Backward Compatibility Testing. Though the pattern doesn’t directly mention the PS3, it seems to hint at it. After all, Sony is sorely lacking compared to the Xbox’s extensive backward compatibility features. Due to this patent, though, it is entirely possible a PS5 Pro could feature PS3 compatibility on a hardware level.

Gundam Breaker 4 on PS5

I was pretty sure the series was done after New Gundam Breaker was poorly received in 2018. It was a bad start when that was the first Gundam Breaker title with an actual Western release. However, much to my surprise, Gundam Breaker 4 was revealed during a Nintendo Direct in February. Fortunately, this release didn’t disappoint, and I’ve finally been given the next mainline Gundam Breaker game I had been holding out hope for.

Instead of being part of the larger Gundam universe, the Gundam Breaker games focus on the Gunpla aspect, encompassing all the model building. In this universe, all gameplay is part of an arcade game. None of the games connect aside from that central theme, but Gundam Breaker 4 provides a bit of evolution to the formula.

Earth Defense Force 6 on PS5

To me, the Earth Defense Force series exists to deliver the perfect comfort food games. Each new installment is similar enough to the one before so that you can easily drop back in, but there’s always a new gameplay wrinkle and enemies to encounter. You always know what you’re getting with any EDF, making it exceptionally easy to lose yourself in them, which is simply the best. I had imported the Japanese release of Earth Defense Force 6 in 2022, and I happily jumped at the chance to review the English release.

For anyone who has not heard of this long-running series, Earth Defense Force is a third-person mission-based shooter. At a base level, the game is all about shooting giant enemies (typically bugs) to collect the random weapons and max health upgrades they drop so that you can take on tougher enemies/difficulties. Earth Defense Force 6 is the first game in the franchise on the PS5, and it definitely shows, as it constantly feels like there are more enemies on screen than I’ve ever seen.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak on PS5

The Trails series is something of a marvel at this point, as this release marks the 11th release of the mainline series that began in 2004. Yet, 20 years later, it is still innovating and taking the series to new heights. That’s not to say this is a game only for series fans. As with all arc introduction games, this is a possible starting point for new players. However, it’s not quite a highly recommended one. As amazing an entry as this is, it is still a piece of a much grander puzzle that deserves to be experienced from an earlier point.

Trails Through Daybreak presents a new piece of the Zemurian puzzle and takes players into the Calvard Republic for the first time. While there are plenty of returning faces, the main focus is on Van Arkride, who runs a business (called Arkride Solutions) for those needing some grey-area help. Van is referred to throughout the game as a ‘Spriggan,’ which means someone who will take on any job, regardless of legality. For this reason, he is at odds with the Bracer guild and Calvardian police.

Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin is the latest Monster Hunter game to be ported to PlayStation after an original PC and Nintendo Switch release. Though it might share the Monster Hunter name, its gameplay structure is markedly different from the mainline series. Because of that, whether you’re a newcomer or a series veteran, it might be hard to decide whether this game is actually for you. Here are our reasons why you should give Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin a shot.

A Nice Introduction to the Monster Hunter World

Monster Hunter Stories 2 serves as a great introduction to what the world of Monster Hunter is like. While it’s wildly different in terms of gameplay, it does allow series newcomers to get an idea of what to expect in the main series.

While we’re still a good amount of time out from the full release of Black Ops 6, information is slowly trickling out. We still don’t know everything, so this is the perfect period of hopefulness. As series fans, here is everything we want to see in Black Ops 6.

Campaign Co-Op

To date, there have been two games in the Call of Duty series to offer co-op in the campaign: World at War and Black Ops 3. Considering the series’ overall focus on multiplayer, this has never made sense to me. Black Ops 3 was made better because you could enjoy the campaign with multiple friends. Not only was this just a good bit of fun, but it also made dealing with the harder difficulties much easier.

Since the Urzikstan map was released for Warzone in late 2023, fans have been waiting for ranked to return. It was most recently mentioned in February in a blog post about Season 2 on the Call of Duty site. It was light on details; all it had to say was that it would come later this year. After three months of silence, while fans have been asking on Reddit and Twitter, there is finally a new update.

Call of Duty-focused outlet Charlie Intel shared in a tweet that Activision promised Ranked was still coming in a call with creators. However, while this is still a confirmation, it is still in the works. The only downside is that Activision didn’t announce a possible date. Instead, they once again give it the “later this year” release window. That might not be completely what was wanted, but at least Activision knows players still want it.

The follow-up to Digimon Last Evolution Kizuna is coming to streaming services next month to cap off Adventure 02, so this seems like a fine time for a little retrospective. Digimon has been going since 1999 and has recreated itself several times with different seasons, so we’re doing the hefty job of ranking them. So join us as we go through every story of digital monsters!

9. Digimon Frontier

Not to act like a series purist, but Digimon Frontier never felt truly Digimon to me. It could be the fact that it lacks part of the vital (and titular) ‘monsters’ element. Five kids get taken to a different world, and instead of being given their own fated partner, they are given a Digivice that allows them to transform. Honestly, it feels more like a Power Rangers knock-off.

We’ve had enough time to properly watch and absorb everything about the first season of Amazon’s Fallout series. With that, we thought it was worth taking a ranking of all Fallout season 1 episodes to measure the best parts of this massive post-apocalyptic adaptation. This really isn’t a ranking of good to bad, but more like excellent to great.

As you can tell, this will be pretty spoiler-heavy, so proceed at your own risk.

Strangely, despite the whole series focusing on alchemy, there isn’t much delving into unique alchemy in Fullmetal Alchemist. State alchemists are the biggest way we see varied techniques and usages, but there aren’t many detailed enough. However, the alchemists who grace the screen are all fun and well-crafted. For the most part, personality seems to matter just as much as alchemical ability, and the specialized characters flourish because of that.

When the series does showcase special/outlaw alchemists, they are only in one-off episodes. There, we don’t get a deep look at their abilities. This means that while we see Isaac McDougal’s cool ice alchemy and Clara’s unusual transmutations, we don’t know much about them. The additional challenge is that series regulars who are alchemists don’t always do anything personalized. For instance, Alphonse and Izumi’s alchemy are quite similar to Edward’s.

Rise of the Ronin on PlayStation 5

I should preface this review by saying that I have played every Team Ninja soulslike and even reviewed Stranger of Paradise, so I had a decent idea of what I was getting into with Rise of the Ronin. I knew enough to be a little hesitant because I like the genre but am not always great at it. With that, I was pleased to find that Rise of the Ronin is far more Nioh than Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, even if it utilizes tweaked mechanics from both.

However, Rise of the Ronin does something that no soulslike has really done before: it offers a choice in difficulty level. This simple inclusion, which has opened so many debates since the release of the first Dark Souls, changed a potentially frustrating experience into one I could actually enjoy. By including one simple thing, I could actually enjoy combat without feeling like I was constantly charging at a brick wall. I do hope this catches on because it works incredibly well in practice.

Helldivers 2 on PlayStation 5

Helldivers 2 joins Risk of Rain 2 in offering a sequel that utilizes an entirely different perspective and then absolutely crushes it. While I had hoped for something to hold me over until the English release of Earth Defense Force 6, I instead found the Starship Troopers game I had always wanted, complete with hilarious propaganda.

There’s not much of a story to Helldivers 2, so as much as there is just a purpose. Bugs (and Automatons) are taking over the galaxy, and it is the Helldivers’ responsibility to ensure that at-risk planets are swiftly liberated. This is easier said than done, as planets are highly infested, and it will take all the explosions and bullets possible to turn the tide in the Galactic War.

A recent State of Play unveiled yet another trailer for Death Stranding 2. As cryptic and unusual trailers are a staple of the series, that got us thinking about how it compared to previous trailers. We did some investigative work to figure out where the game’s main trailers stack up as far as being entirely confusing and strange.

8. 2019 Release Date Trailer (DS1)

The trailer that revealed the release date kind of felt like the end of some of the weirdness, and instead, it leveled with viewers. Rather than offer a bunch of story bits that feel like a jumbled-up jigsaw puzzle, you get an actual stream of story information. You also get a sense of the threats in that it shows the BTs and actual combat with yellow-suit thugs.
